Roberte M. D. Makowski, Ph.D., J.D advises clients on all aspects of Intellectual Property, including development and implementation of global IP strategies and procedures relating to patents, trade secrets, and trademarks, life cycle management of patent rights, M&A IP due diligence, licensing, transactions and agreements of all types with IP components, patentability and freedom to operate evaluations, non-infringement and invalidity opinions, patent and trademark global portfolio management, strategies to enforce and defend patent and trademark portfolios globally, patent litigation analysis, and counselling and training clients at all levels from university and summer students, the R&D and business communities, marketing and sales teams, to the C-suite on all aspects of IP.

Roberte has represented public, private and start-up companies in the crop-protection, biotechnology (transgenic plants, microorganisms, and cells), biologicals, chemical, pharmaceuticals, and flavors and fragrance industries.

Roberte previously served as the Chief IP Counsel for FMC Corporation, responsible for a global team of IP professionals in Asia, Europe and the US, and accountable for all aspects of IP globally (patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secret).  In that capacity, she evaluated, drafted, and negotiated IP related agreements, developed and implemented efficient and cost-effective procedures for protecting innovations from R&D centers located globally, was a strategic partner for M&A and due diligence special projects, and strategically managed the defense of FMC patents and trademarks around the world, to name a few. Roberte previously practiced in-house at BASF Corporation and Firmenich Inc., and in private practice as a partner at Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz LLP.  Prior to her law career, she was a professor at Wilmington University managing the science program and a research scientist with the Canadian Department of Agriculture focusing on biologicals.

She is a board member of the US IP Alliance and the Penn State Dickinson Law Advisory Board.
